The Ask
Approach
To understand the user needs and design for a technical subject matter as quickly as possible, we ran 2 parallel tracks across 2-week sprints to feed the pipeline while tackling detailed design.
To run with maximum efficiency, we ran 2 parallel tracks of work.
Track 1 - Foundation setting:
Prepare for the work ahead of the roadmap: the design leads (including myself) worked with the client to identify the next priority and collected requirements for the work using sketches and prompts to further understand the use cases and pain points.
Track 2 - Design sprints:
Our 2 designers will create detailed designs—interaction, visual, and annotation—with the goal of a development handoff.

Output
56 weeks
27 sprints
2 rounds of user testing
8 design handoffs
As of May 2024, we’ve partnered with our client for over 56 weeks and have had 8 design handoffs over 27 sprints. Each handoff covers a major feature enhancement or introduces a new functionality. For key features that have changed significantly in the redesigned version, we conducted usability testing with actual users to validate and refine the design.
We introduced 8 major brand new features
Auto Frac Dashboard
Primary view for the frac consultant to monitor the job in the frac van, giving prominence to Auto Frac mode to highlight the technology.
Auto Frac Settings
Configurable settings for each well/stage, marking the introduction of Auto Frac in Octiv Connect for function and marketing purpose
Treatment Comparison
Compare treatments across pads/wells with robust filtering and customizable plot views.
Connectivity Status
View pad connectivity status and receive alerts for critical issues globally, on individual pad cards, and on the pad dashboard.
Auto Frac Feedback
We encourage the frac consultant to rate and provide feedback for each stage, aiming to utilize positive ratings to promote Auto Frac.
Marketing Email Template
Standard template for the team to leverage for updates regarding the OC platform.
Customizable Views
The ability for users to create and save dashboards with their own plot configurations.
KPI Customization
Customizable KPI selection and order of display on the Frac Overview
Concurrently, we enhanced/reimagined 7 capabilities
UI Kit
In parallel with sprint delivery, we invested design time to harmonize and centralize UI patterns.
Navigation
Enhanced navigation for finding pads from the homepage and Pad section. Increased visibility of Saved Crews on both the homepage and the navigation bar.
Feed and Notifications
User can prioritize and customize notifications for specific crews and operators. Enhanced and clarified function for Feed and Notifications.
Power
Track energy consumption—diesel, gas, and electric if applicable—over a period of time and the overall job.
Post-Job Reports
Download post-job reports in multiple file types to include customizable data: wells/treatments, date and variables.
Email Subscription & Distribution
Both internal and external users can create customized distribution lists, and subscribe to selected topics and variables.
What’s New Modal
Template that highlight new features, key updates and fixes for each release.
Challenge & Remediation
With the specialized, highly technical nature of our work, we rely heavily on frequent collaboration with our stakeholders to understand the users’ mindsets and explore use cases for Halliburton employees and their customers — Completion Engineers, Business Development personnel, Fracturing Consultant, and Treaters.
Internally, we collaborate daily with our subject matter expert in the energy space to ensure accuracy of scenario and data.
We’ve conducted 2 rounds of usability testing, virtually with different user types, and the work has been received positively. The next user testing (tentative July 2024) will be conducted on site with a coded product, in a real job setting.
